Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I use the Sauna?
Please check your local council rules and regulations with regard to portable outdoor fireplaces. In most situations, you can use it in the backyard of your home or in public with permission.
The sauna is intended for outdoor use only. It should be set up at least 2 feet away from any dwelling, brush, or low-hanging branches.
What is the sauna's capacity?
The sauna comfortably seats 4 people; this is, of course, dependent on the number of benches in your sauna and the seating configuration.
Can I use the sauna in the cold?
Yes! Our tents are constructed with three layers of durable fabric with one layer of cotton insulation in between that retains heat very well, even in colder climates. When used properly, the sauna will maintain temperatures of 80°C+ in temperatures as low as -10ºC.
Do I need to clean it? Will it smell?
It does not smell, and there is not much cleaning required. Moisture runs down the sides of the tent walls and drains onto the ground. Any residual moisture is evaporated due to the high heat inside the tent. We recommend emptying the ashtray and removing excess soot from inside the chimney after every 3-4 uses.
Can I leave it out permanently?
Yes, you can leave it up permanently. Our sauna tent is made from a durable, weather-resistant fabric and includes a water-resistant roof cover. However, we do recommend packing it up for storage inside during times of extreme weather.
Is it safe and secure in the wind?
Chillez Sauna has a built-in skirt running along both the interior and exterior of the base. We recommend weighing down the skirt with heavy weights such as bricks or sandbags. It also comes with a set of pegs and guy ropes to further secure the tent in windier conditions.
As previously stated, should the weather conditions become extreme, you should disassemble and store your Chillez Sauna.
Is it safe for the materials to get so hot?
Our tents are made with Oxford 210D nylon that is rated to approximately 150ºC, meaning it will not melt or leach chemicals at 90ºC (the approximate highest temperature our saunas go). The tent windows are made of a high-temperature performance thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
It is normal for the stove and chimney to glow red hot in use. The stove is designed to withstand this heat and should not be a worry. However, over-firing the stove regularly can damage it, so you should limit how often this happens. To reduce the likelihood of over-firing your stove, slide the knob on the front air vent of your stove to reduce the rate of combustion. Using no more than 3-4 pieces of wood at any one time will also help prevent over-firing your stove.
The ONLY item that should make contact with the stove during its use are the sauna rocks on top.
What are some tips on maximising the Sauna temperature?
- Use only kiln-dried, dense hardwood.
- Firmly anchor the tent with pegs to minimise cold air inflow from the base.
- Minimise air flow underneath the tent skirting by securing the perimeter with weights (rocks, bricks, sandbags) and fitting the sauna with the guy ropes and pegs provided.
- Fully open the vent at the front of the stove to maximise combustion.
- Allow at least 30 minutes for the sauna to properly heat up the sauna rocks.
- Frequent water pouring over the sauna stones can lower their temperature and consequently the room temperature. It’s recommended to do this approximately every 10 minutes.
- Allow 10 minutes between each time you pour water on the sauna rocks. Over-pouring water onto the stones lowers their temperature and, subsequently, the room temperature.
Do I need a specific type of flooring inside the tent?
Your Chillez Sauna can be placed directly onto grass, concrete, dirt, or unvarnished wood.
